The village of Politiko is the successor to the Archaic to Byzantine city of Tamassos, and occupies more or less the same site. Several early travellers from the 16th century onwards mention it because of its classical connections and its wealth in mineral resources such as copper, gold and vitriol. The monasteries of Ayios Iraklidhios (SCY326) and Ayios Mnason (SCY346) are situated on its outskirts.
